Thinking about booking the Munich City Rally but have a few questions? Perfect. Here you'll find answers to the most important topics – from booking to tech, from weather flexibility to kid-friendliness. Everything you need to know in one place.
1. General Questions
What is the Munich City Rally?
The Munich City Rally is an interactive walking tour through Munich's Old Town. You play on your smartphone, follow an engaging story, solve riddles right at the locations, and listen to professional audio guides with historical context. Unlike traditional city tours, you decide when you start and set your own pace.
How long does the rally take?
Plan for 2–3 hours for the full story. But it really depends on you: you can go faster or linger at beautiful spots, take photos, or grab a coffee. Breaks are possible anytime and don't affect your 72-hour window.
How many kilometers do we walk?
The route covers about 3 km through the Old Town – spread across 8 stations. That's much more relaxed than traditional city tours and perfect for a half-day activity.
Where is the starting point?
You start at the Frauenkirche, Munich's iconic landmark with the famous twin domes. The church is centrally located in the Old Town and easy to reach by public transport.
Where does the rally end?
The final station is Odeonsplatz with the Feldherrnhalle. Dr. Leonhard Stern summarizes the story, and you can wind down the day at a nearby café.
Can I pause anytime?
Absolutely! The rally is super flexible. You can stop anywhere, grab a coffee, visit a museum, or just relax. When you open the app later, it picks up exactly where you left off.
Is there a free trial station?
Yes! The first station is completely free – no registration needed. You get the full experience: riddles, audio guide, navigation, everything. After that, you decide if you want to unlock the remaining stations.
2. Booking & Pricing
What does the Munich City Rally cost?
Full access costs €24.99 one-time. That's it for up to 6 people – just one purchase. No subscription, no hidden fees. Compare: a traditional city tour often costs €15–30 per person.
How many people can use one ticket?
One ticket = up to 6 people. You'll get a team code via email, and everyone can play on their own devices simultaneously. Progress syncs automatically so you're always on the same page. No extra charge per person.
How do I book?
Super simple:
- Start the first station for free (no registration needed)
- If you like it: Register (email + password)
- Pay €24.99 via Stripe (credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay)
- Get your team code via email immediately and start playing
When does the 72-hour timer start?
Here's the cool part: your access unlocks immediately after payment. But the 72-hour countdown only starts when you or your team opens the first station. You decide when to begin – perfect for planning with friends or family.
Can I change the start date?
Yes! After purchasing, you can wait as long as you want before starting. The countdown only runs once you open the first station. You have complete flexibility for scheduling.
Are there group discounts?
No, but €24.99 is already very fair for a group. Compare: 6 people typically pay €90–180 for a traditional tour. With City Rally: €24.99 for everyone.
Which payment methods do you accept?
We use Stripe, which accepts:
- Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.)
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
- Additional regional payment methods via Stripe
Do I get an invoice?

3. Technical Questions
Do I need an app?
No! The rally runs entirely in your browser on your smartphone. You'll get an access link via email – open it, and you're done. Works great on both iPhone and Android.
Which devices are supported?
All modern smartphones work:
- iOS: Version 12 and higher
- Android: Version 8 and higher
- Tablets are also possible
- Desktop browsers for planning
Does it work offline?
No, you need a stable internet connection. GPS navigation, audio guides, and Google Maps all require live data.
Do I need mobile data?
Yes, mobile internet or WiFi is required. Audio guides stream (but they're short – just 3–5 minutes per station). Google Maps also needs live data for navigation. Tip: Standard mobile plans in Germany work fine.
What if my battery dies?
Bring a power bank – highly recommended! The rally takes 2–3 hours, and cold weather drains batteries faster. Tip: Turn on battery saver mode on your phone. The audio guides are short, so you don't need sound constantly on.
Can everyone in the team play on their own phone?
Yes! The rally syncs across up to 6 devices using your team code. Everyone sees the same riddles and content. Progress updates automatically, so you're always in sync – even if different people play different stations.
4. Content & Difficulty
How hard are the riddles?
The riddles are light to moderate difficulty. They're not brain-teasing logic puzzles like escape rooms. The focus is on discovery: you examine the location closely, spot details, and understand the story through that. If needed, hints are available in stages. Great even if you've never done riddles before.
Do I need prior knowledge about Munich?
Not at all. The rally works without any prior knowledge. All info, stories, and context are explained to you. The audio guides provide full background on the Wittelsbacher history and each landmark.
What languages is the rally available in?
German and English. Both versions are equally complete with professional audio guides and full content. You choose your language before starting.
Which sights do I visit?
You explore 8 iconic locations in the Old Town:
- Frauenkirche (landmark)
- Marienplatz (heart of the city)
- Residenz (Wittelsbacher palace)
- Odeonsplatz (neoclassical square)
- Plus 4 more historically significant sites
All must-sees are connected by a thoughtful route.
Is it interesting for locals too?
Yes! Many Munich residents play the rally. You discover new perspectives on familiar places, learn deeper Wittelsbacher stories, and notice details you'd overlooked before. It's like seeing the city with fresh eyes.
Are there hints if I get stuck?
Yes! Hints unlock in stages – you control how much help you want. Early hints are subtle, later ones are more direct. If you really want to move on, you can reveal the solution; the station gets marked "solved."
5. Organization & Timing
What time of day should I start?
Recommended: 9 AM–6 PM. After 6 PM, some locations become inaccessible. Best time is morning 9–11 AM: fewer tourists, better photos, more relaxed puzzle-solving. Sundays tend to be busier.
What's the best season?
- Spring/Fall: Perfect weather, not too hot, not too cold – ideal!
- Summer: Long daylight, but many tourists in the Old Town
- Winter: Christmas markets are nice, but it gets dark early (around 5 PM)
- Playable year-round – weather and daylight are the only variables
What if it rains?
The rally is still playable! Just bring an umbrella. Here's the key: the 72-hour countdown only starts when you open the first station. If rain is in the forecast or timing doesn't work – no problem. Start on a different day. You have complete flexibility.
Are all locations always accessible?
Basically yes. Churches occasionally close, but that's rare. Squares and outdoor areas (where most riddles are) are always open. In winter: heavy snow could occasionally affect access, but that's very rare.
Can I take breaks for food and drinks?
Absolutely – that's even recommended! 2–3 hours of walking = typically 1–2 breaks. Many groups grab snacks at Viktualienmarkt (fresh produce, drinks), others visit a café. The rally pauses when you pause.
Where can I eat along the way?
The rally includes insider tips on cafés, restaurants, and beer gardens. At each station, you'll find recommendations nearby. Viktualienmarkt is also a station – perfect for quick snacks and refreshments.
6. For Families & Kids
What age is it suitable for?
- Best from age 10: Riddles and story are engaging
- With support from 7–8: Parents help with riddles
- Teenagers: Ideal – puzzles are interesting, and the team experience is cool
- Under 7: Possible, but kids may need patience with riddles
Is it stroller-friendly?
Somewhat. The Old Town has lots of cobblestones, so you need a sturdy stroller with good wheels. The route is flat (no major hills), but the pavement can be challenging. Tip: For very small children, a backpack might be easier.
Are the contents kid-friendly?
Yes! The story is engaging for all ages. Dr. Leonhard Stern tells it compellingly, riddles are fun (not too easy, not too hard), and the audio guides are captivating – not boring and preachy.
Will teenagers enjoy it?
Absolutely! Teens love riddles and story. The team experience is cool at that age, and the audio guides are professionally produced (not childish). Bonus: Plenty of Instagram-worthy photo spots along the route!
